HTML
What is HTML?

Hypertext Markup Language also commonly referred to as HTML is a mark-up text we use for structure and to label certain elements or groups of elements on a website.

Why do I need to know HTML?

HTML is the framework and thus the foundation of a website, without knowledge of it you wont be able to build a website without help from a wiziwig editor. On-top of this notion, when being expected to fix a line of code on a website, a good understand of what HTML looks like and how it behaves is crucial.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Page Title</title>
</head>
<body>

<h1>This is a Heading
</h1>
<p>This is a paragraph. <strong>This is bolded text within a paragraph.</strong></p>
<a href="https://www.google.co.za" target="_blank">This is a link to Google that will open in a new tab</a>
<span class="cssStyle">This is an object with a class that can be pulled into CSS.<span>
<div id="1" class="cssStyle divStyle">This is a DIV with two classes and a unique identifier (id).</div>
<!--This is how you make comments in HTML code (this wont appear in the visual view / browser)-->
<img src="sum_image.jpg" title="This is an image" />
<img src="/folder_name/sum_image.jpg" title="This is an image in a folder" />
<img src="../sum_image.jpg" title="This is an image in a folder that is one level back from this pages folder" />

</body>
</html>

Conclusion

The main reason we use HTML is so that we can build and maintain websites. While there are loads of other frameworks out there, the most commonly used ones are based off of HTML.
